A majority of car accidents are fairly straightforward. One driver becomes distracted or loses control of the vehicle and runs into another car or obstacle. This occurred to one driver in New York after she saw a spider in her car, panicked and ran into an object in the side of the road.
No matter how much experience driving you have, a car crash can happen to anyone. It is paramount to know what steps to follow in the immediate aftermath to bolster your accident claim.
- Check on everyone involved
Even if the crash seems minor, you should pull off to the side of the road to check on everyone. You should call the police if anyone suffered an injury. In fact, it is a good idea to call law enforcement no matter what so that they can create an official police report of the incident. This will lay out who is ultimately at fault, which will help tremendously if your case goes to court.
- Exchange information
Before an officer arrives, you should talk to the other driver and exchange insurance information. You should write down all of the details about the other driver, including name, email address, phone number and driver’s license number. During this conversation, you should not take the blame for the accident. You do not want to admit legal liability at this time when the other driver may share some of the blame.
- Take pictures
Another important piece of evidence to have is photographs of the scene. You should take pictures of both cars, as well as anything on the road that may have contributed to the crash.
- See a doctor
Once you handle all of this, you need to seek out medical treatment. You may feel fine, but a check-up is good just in case. If the doctor prescribes medication or physical therapy, then you need to follow the instructions precisely.
